Manager as Coach

Manager as Coach

In today’s workplace, the manager needs to be more of a Coach.

Manager as Coach, why bother?

Once upon a time, most people began careers by developing expertise in a technical, or professional domain. Doing your job well meant having the right answers and this led to them rising up the corporate ladder.

As a manager, you knew what needed to be done, you taught others how to do it.  Command and control was the name of the management game, and your goal was to direct and develop employees who understood how the business worked and were able to reproduce its previous successes.

Not today!

Change is the name of the game!

And it’s rapid, constant and disruptive change that is the new norm.  What worked in the past has no guarantee of working in the future. Twenty-first-century managers simply don’t (and can’t!) have all the right answers. To cope with this new reality, companies are moving away from traditional command-and-control practices and toward something very different: a model in which managers give support and guidance rather than instructions, and employees learn how to adapt to constantly changing environments in ways that unleash fresh energy, innovation, and commitment.

In today’s workplace, the manager needs to be more of a Coach.

The Manager as Coach – why bother?

There is a very well-known parable from days past that applies to today’s intersection between the business world and coaching; ‘Give a person a fish and you feed them once, teach a person to fish and you feed them for a lifetime’.

To do this, managers need to surrender the “I know best, command and control” style of management.

There are 5 common reasons it makes sense to train your managers (or you might be a

business owner)

  1. You’ll enhance employee buy in and commitment to the vision
  2. Reduced staff turnover
  3. Greater co-operation and less employee conflict
  4. Increased self-awareness and interpersonal skills
  5. Enhanced performance overall

Coaches, whether in a business or an external consultant, empower  the “coachee” to think differently, create self-awareness, and teach integrated thinking and observation. In turn, leaders with the skills to coach are more effective at motivating their teams, creating connections, building trust, and fostering an environment of innovation.

Through coaching you can learn to build trust and rapport within your team and boost your communication skills by using active listening, reflection, empathy, and powerful questioning.

This is a hands-on program that teaches participants how to become coaches themselves, or coach their colleagues and leaders to new heights. To get the most out of this Masterclass, participants are asked to be ready and open to being coached and share their experiences with the wider group.
